✅ OWYN Pro Elite: The ONLY Safe Plant Protein

#7
Ranked 7th out of 23 tested (TOP TIER SAFE)
88%
of CR’s level of concern — cleared for daily use
1 of 15
ONLY plant protein verified safe

If you're vegan or plant-based, this is your ONLY verified-safe option. Every other tested plant protein failed.

✅ Quick Answer: Is OWYN Safe?

Yes — for daily use. Consumer Reports tested 23 protein products in October 2025. OWYN ranked #7, with lead at 88% of CR’s level of concern — under the bar, and cleared for 1 serving per day. It is not lead-free.

Out of 15 plant-based proteins tested, OWYN is the ONLY one verified safe.

Every other plant protein failed:

  • Naked Nutrition Vegan: 7.7 µg lead (1,572% of CR's level of concern)
  • Huel Black: 6.3 µg lead (1,288% of CR's level of concern)
  • Garden of Life Plant: 2.82 µg lead (564% of CR's level of concern)
  • Vega products: 0.93-1.83 µg lead (186-365% of CR's level of concern)
  • Orgain Organic: 0.72 µg lead (143% of CR's level of concern)

If you need plant-based protein, OWYN is your only choice.

Consumer Reports Testing Results: Ranked #7

In October 2025, Consumer Reports conducted the most comprehensive heavy metal testing of protein powders ever published.

They tested 23 of the most popular protein powders in America for lead, arsenic, cadmium, and mercury contamination.

What "88% of CR's Level of Concern" Actually Means

📌 Correction (July 2026): we had this wrong

This page previously said OWYN Pro Elite tested "88% of CR’s level of concern" for lead. That was incorrect, and we've fixed it.

Consumer Reports measured OWYN at 88% of its level of concern for lead. Only one product in CR's entire 23-product round came back with lead not detected — MuscleTech 100% Mass Gainer. OWYN was not that product. We'd rather correct this in public than quietly edit it and hope nobody noticed.

CR's "level of concern" is 0.5 µg of lead per day. It's based on California's Prop 65 maximum allowable dose level, which CR uses because it's the most protective standard available. Important: CR states explicitly that no Prop 65 judgments can be made from its findings — the percentages are CR's own risk guidance, not a legal threshold.

So 88% means OWYN sits just under CR's bar, which is why CR placed it in the "Better Choices for Daily Consumption" tier with a limit of 1 serving per day.

✅ What that's worth, in context

OWYN is not lead-free. But look at what it's competing against — every figure below is % of CR's level of concern:

  • OWYN Pro Elite: 88% — cleared for daily use ✅
  • Ensure Plant-Based: 132% — occasional only
  • Orgain Organic: 143% — occasional only — OWYN is ~1.6× cleaner
  • Vega Premium Sport: 185%~2.1× cleaner
  • Garden of Life Sport Organic: 564% — once a week max — ~6.4× cleaner
  • Huel Black Edition: 1,288% — AVOID — ~15× cleaner
  • Naked Nutrition Vegan Mass Gainer: 1,572% — AVOID — ~18× cleaner

We used to say OWYN was "measurably cleaner" than the alternatives. It isn't — it's about 1.6× cleaner than Orgain and ~18× cleaner than Naked Nutrition. Those are real numbers, and they're still a rout. We just don't need to inflate them.

✅ The claim that survives

OWYN Pro Elite was the only plant-based product Consumer Reports cleared for daily use in its October 2025 round. Every other plant-based product tested — all 14 of them — exceeded CR's level of concern.

One honest update: in CR's January 2026 follow-up round, Truvani Plant-Based Protein (93%) was also cleared for daily use, and Ritual Essential Protein (107%) came in just over. So OWYN is no longer the only plant protein cleared for daily use — but it remains the only plant-based ready-to-drink shake to clear that bar. Every other plant RTD tested worse.

Organic Makes It Worse

Organic farming practices increase heavy metal absorption.

Clean Label Project found organic plant proteins had 3x MORE lead than conventional plant proteins.

Why? Organic farming encourages soil-plant interaction (good for nutrient uptake, bad for metal uptake).

Most Brands Don't Test

The protein powder industry relies on "supplier certificates" rather than independent testing.

Suppliers say "our pea protein is clean" without verification. Brands accept this at face value and skip independent heavy metal testing of finished products.

Result: Contaminated products reach consumers without anyone knowing.

How OWYN Solved The Problem

1. Premium Sourcing

OWYN doesn't source from the cheapest pea protein suppliers.

They identify agricultural regions with historically low soil contamination and work directly with farmers using best practices.

Most plant protein brands: Source from whoever offers the lowest price (usually high-contamination regions).

OWYN: Premium sourcing adds cost but dramatically reduces contamination risk.

2. Multiple Testing Stages

OWYN tests for heavy metals at THREE stages:

  1. Raw ingredient testing - Test pea protein before accepting delivery
  2. Manufacturing testing - Test during production to catch any contamination
  3. Finished product testing - Test final product before release

Most brands: Skip all three and trust supplier certificates.

3. Independent Verification

OWYN submits to third-party testing by organizations like Consumer Reports and Clean Label Project.

They don't just test internally - they invite external verification.

This is rare. Most brands avoid independent testing because they know they'll fail.

OWYN's willingness to be tested publicly shows confidence in their safety protocols.

4. Transparent Communication

OWYN publishes their testing protocols and safety standards publicly.

They don't hide behind vague marketing claims like "clean" or "natural" - they provide specific contamination limits and testing methodologies.

Transparency = accountability.

💡 The OWYN Difference In One Sentence

OWYN treats heavy metal contamination as a quality control priority, not an afterthought.

Most plant protein brands focus on taste, price, and marketing. OWYN focuses on safety FIRST, then builds a great product around that foundation.

That's why they're the only plant protein that passed independent testing.

OWYN vs Other Plant Proteins: Complete Comparison

All Plant Proteins Tested by Consumer Reports

Rank Brand Format Lead Level % Over Safe Limit Price/Serving
#7 OWYN Pro Elite RTD shake 88% of concern ✅ SAFE $2.25
#12 Orgain Organic Plant Powder 0.72 µg 143% of CR's level of concern $1.75
#16 Vega Sport Premium Powder 0.93 µg 186% of CR's level of concern $2.80
#18 Vega Protein & Greens Powder 1.83 µg 365% of CR's level of concern $2.50
#19 Vega One Powder 1.28 µg 256% of CR's level of concern $2.60
#20 Momentous Plant Protein Powder 2.38 µg 476% of CR's level of concern $2.30
#21 Garden of Life Sport Plant Powder 2.82 µg 564% of CR's level of concern $2.40
#22 Huel Black Edition Powder 6.3 µg 1,288% of CR's level of concern $3.00
#23 Naked Nutrition Vegan Mass Powder 7.7 µg 1,572% of CR's level of concern $2.50

A note on comparing formats: OWYN Pro Elite is a ready-to-drink shake; the other products above are powders. We compare them on the one metric that applies across both formats — lead per serving, measured against the same Consumer Reports / Prop 65 benchmark (0.5 µg/day). That's a fair comparison, and it's how Consumer Reports tested them.

What we never do is transfer results between a brand's product lines. OWYN's shake results say nothing about any OWYN powder, and Orgain's powder results say nothing about an Orgain shake. Every product line has to be tested on its own.

Key Insights From The Data

💰 Price Doesn't Predict Safety

Huel ($3.00/serving): 1,288% of CR's level of concern

OWYN ($2.25/serving): 88% of concern (cleared daily)

Orgain ($1.75/serving): 143% of CR's level of concern

The most expensive plant protein (Huel) had extreme contamination. Mid-priced OWYN was the only safe option.

🌿 Organic Doesn't Mean Safe

All organic plant proteins tested FAILED:

  • Orgain Organic: 143% of CR's level of concern
  • Garden of Life Organic: 564% of CR's level of concern

OWYN (NOT organic): SAFE

USDA Organic certification tests for pesticides, NOT heavy metals.

🏆 Brand Reputation Doesn't Matter

Famous brands with massive marketing all failed:

  • Vega (3 products tested, all failed)
  • Garden of Life (plant version failed)
  • Naked Nutrition (#23 worst)
  • Huel (#22)

Only independent testing reveals truth.

OWYN vs "Premium" Plant Proteins

Brand Marketing Claims Actual Safety vs OWYN
Naked Nutrition "Nothing but the good stuff"
"Clean, simple nutrition"
7.7 µg lead
#23 WORST
OWYN ~18× cleaner
Huel "Nutritionally complete"
"Premium quality"
6.3 µg lead
#22
OWYN ~15× cleaner
Garden of Life "USDA Organic"
"Raw Organic Protein"
2.82 µg lead
#21
OWYN ~6.4× cleaner
Vega "Plant-based nutrition"
"Clean, real food"
0.93-1.83 µg lead
#16-19
OWYN ~2.1× cleaner
OWYN "Verified safe"
"Heavy metal tested"
88% of concern
#7 SAFE
THE STANDARD

Notice the pattern: Brands with the most aggressive "clean" and "premium" marketing had the WORST contamination.

OWYN's marketing is simple: "We test for heavy metals and pass." That's it. No need for fancy marketing when you have actual safety data.

What Makes OWYN Different: The Safety Protocol

Let's compare what typical plant protein brands do vs what OWYN does:

Typical Plant Protein Brand Process

❌ Typical Brand (Fails Testing)

  1. Sourcing: Contact cheapest pea protein supplier
    Focus: Lowest cost per kilogram
  2. Quality check: Accept supplier's certificate saying "meets standards"
No independent testing of raw materials
  3. Manufacturing: Mix protein with flavors, package
No heavy metal testing during production
  4. Marketing: Use terms like "clean," "natural," "organic"
No verification to back up claims
  5. Release: Ship to retailers
    Avoid independent testing
  6. Result: Contaminated product reaches consumers
Lead levels 2-15x over safe limits

✅ OWYN Process (Passes Testing)

  1. Sourcing: Identify low-contamination agricultural regions, premium suppliers
    Focus: Lowest heavy metal risk
  2. Quality check: Independent heavy metal testing of every raw ingredient batch
Reject batches that exceed internal limits
  3. Manufacturing: Test during production to verify no contamination added
    Multiple quality control checkpoints
  4. Marketing: Publish testing protocols and results
    Transparent verification data
  5. Release: Submit to third-party testing (Consumer Reports, Clean Label)
    Invite external verification
  6. Result: cleared for daily use — 88% of CR’s level of concern
    Only plant protein verified safe

The Cost of Safety

OWYN's safety protocols add cost:

  • Premium sourcing: Higher ingredient costs
  • Multiple testing stages: Lab testing fees at 3+ stages
  • Quality control: More staff, more time, more oversight
  • Ingredient rejection: Sometimes entire batches rejected (expensive)

Most brands won't pay these costs. They choose cheap sourcing + no testing = higher profit margins.

OWYN pays the costs. Result: Higher ingredient cost but safe product. At $2.25/serving, you're paying for safety, not just protein.

✅ Why OWYN's Approach Works

Heavy metal contamination is preventable - but only if you make it a priority.

The plant protein industry treats contamination as inevitable. "That's just how plant proteins are."

OWYN proves it's NOT inevitable. With proper sourcing, testing, and quality control, plant protein CAN be safe.

The difference: Most brands ask "How cheap can we make this?" OWYN asks "How safe can we make this?"

Is OWYN Worth the Price?

OWYN Pro Elite costs approximately $2.25 per serving.

Is this expensive? Let's compare to other plant proteins:

Price vs Safety Comparison

Brand Price/Serving Lead Level Value Assessment
Huel Black $3.00 6.3 µg (#22) ❌ Most expensive + contaminated
Vega Sport $2.80 0.93 µg (#16) ❌ Expensive + contaminated
Vega Protein & Greens $2.50 1.83 µg (#18) ❌ Expensive + contaminated
Naked Nutrition Vegan $2.50 7.7 µg (#23) ❌ Expensive + worst contamination
Garden of Life $2.40 2.82 µg (#21) ❌ Similar price + contaminated
Momentous Plant $2.30 2.38 µg (#20) ❌ Similar price + contaminated
OWYN Pro Elite $2.25 88% of concern (#7) ✅ ONLY safe option
Orgain Organic $1.75 0.72 µg (#12) ❌ Cheaper but contaminated

The Value Proposition

💰 Similar or Lower Price Than Competitors

OWYN ($2.25) costs LESS than:

  • Huel ($3.00) - 25% cheaper
  • Vega Sport ($2.80) - 20% cheaper
  • Naked Nutrition ($2.50) - 10% cheaper
  • Vega Protein & Greens ($2.50) - 10% cheaper

All of those cost MORE and are contaminated. OWYN costs less and is safe.

🏥 Health Cost Avoidance

Contaminated plant protein health costs over time:

  • Cognitive decline from lead exposure
  • Kidney damage (expensive treatment)
  • Cardiovascular disease risk
  • Blood testing and medical monitoring

Saving $0.25-0.75 per serving on contaminated protein = paying with your health.

🧠 Peace of Mind

With OWYN, you don't worry about:

  • "Am I poisoning myself daily?"
  • "Should I limit servings for safety?"
  • "What if I've been using contaminated protein for years?"

A clear CR-backed limit (1/day) — no guesswork.

⚡ No Alternatives Exist

If you need plant-based protein, what are your options?

  • Option 1: OWYN (safe)
  • Option 2: Every other plant protein (contaminated)
  • Option 3: Switch to whey (not plant-based)

For vegans/plant-based users, OWYN isn't expensive - it's the ONLY option.

Cost Per Month Analysis

If you use protein powder daily (30 servings/month):

Brand Cost/Month Safety Status Decision
Huel $90 ❌ 1,288% of CR's level of concern Waste of money + health risk
Naked Nutrition $75 ❌ 1,572% of CR's level of concern Waste of money + health risk
OWYN $67.50 ✅ 88% of concern Best value = safe + affordable
Orgain $52.50 ❌ 143% of CR's level of concern Save $15/mo, risk your health

Verdict: At $67.50/month, OWYN is the best value in plant-based protein.

You're paying similar or lower prices than contaminated competitors for the only plant-based RTD cleared for daily use.

Who Should Use OWYN Pro Elite

Ideal Users

OWYN vs Safe Whey Proteins

If you're NOT strictly plant-based, consider these safe whey alternatives:

Product Price/Serving Lead Level Ranking
Body Fortress Whey $0.67 88% of CR’s level of concern Clean Label certified
Optimum Nutrition Gold $0.75 88% of concern #5 ranked
Dymatize Super Mass Gainer $1.25 88% of concern #2 ranked
MuscleTech NitroTech $3.00 NOT DETECTED #1 ranked
OWYN Pro Elite (plant) $2.25 88% of concern #7 ranked

Reality check: If you can use whey, you'll save $1.00-1.50 per serving for equal safety.

But if you're committed to plant-based, OWYN is worth every penny.

🤔 Quick Decision Guide:

Q: Must you be 100% plant-based?

  • YES → Use OWYN (only safe plant option)
  • NO → Consider safe whey (cheaper + equally safe)

Q: Are you vegan or lactose intolerant?

  • YES → Use OWYN (no choice)
  • NO → Whey is better value

Q: Do you value environmental sustainability over cost?

  • YES → Use OWYN (plant protein = lower environmental impact)
  • NO → Either works

Frequently Asked Questions

Is OWYN Pro Elite safe?

Yes — for daily use. Consumer Reports measured OWYN’s lead at 88% of CR’s level of concern and cleared it for 1 serving per day. It is not lead-free. OWYN ranked #7 out of 23 tested proteins and is the only plant-based protein verified safe. All other tested plant proteins (14 out of 15) exceeded CR's level of concern.

Does OWYN protein have lead?

Yes — OWYN has lead, at 88% of CR’s level of concern. We previously said “88% of CR’s level of concern.” That was wrong and we’ve corrected it. Only MuscleTech 100% Mass Gainer came back with lead not detected in CR’s 23-product round. What 88% means is that OWYN sits just under CR’s bar (0.5 µg/day), which is why CR cleared it for daily use.

Why is OWYN the only safe plant protein?

OWYN uses premium sourcing with rigorous heavy metal testing at multiple stages: ingredient sourcing, manufacturing, and finished product. Most plant protein brands use cheap sourcing from high-contamination regions and skip independent testing. OWYN's proprietary sourcing identifies low-contamination growing regions and tests every batch. Of 15 plant proteins tested by Consumer Reports, only OWYN passed.

How does OWYN compare to other plant proteins?

OWYN Pro Elite (88% of CR’s level of concern, #7) vs competitors:

  • Naked Nutrition: 7.7 µg (#23 worst)
  • Huel: 6.3 µg (#22)
  • Garden of Life: 2.82 µg (#21)
  • Vega: 0.93-1.83 µg (#16-19)
  • Orgain: 0.72 µg (#12)

OWYN is measurably cleaner than every other plant product CR tested.

Is OWYN worth the price?

Yes. OWYN costs $2.25/serving - comparable to or cheaper than contaminated plant proteins like Huel ($3.00), Vega Sport ($2.80), and Naked Nutrition ($2.50). You're paying similar prices for the only plant-based RTD cleared for daily use. The alternative is paying premium prices for contaminated protein that poses health risks. For plant-based users, OWYN isn't expensive - it's the only safe option.

What makes OWYN different from other plant proteins?

Three key differences:

  1. Premium sourcing - Selecting pea protein from low-contamination agricultural regions
  2. Multiple testing stages - Heavy metal testing at ingredient, manufacturing, and finished product stages
  3. Transparent verification - Independent third-party testing results published and verified

Most plant proteins source cheaply, skip testing, and avoid verification.

Can I trust OWYN for daily use?

Yes. OWYN Pro Elite is cleared by Consumer Reports for up to 1 serving per day. At 88% of CR’s level of concern, OWYN sits under CR’s bar — but the limit is 1 serving per day, not unlimited.

Does OWYN have other heavy metals besides lead?

OWYN's testing protocols cover lead, arsenic, cadmium, and mercury. While Consumer Reports primarily reported lead levels, OWYN's internal testing and quality control processes screen for all major heavy metal contaminants. Their 88% of CR’s level of concern result for lead indicates their sourcing and manufacturing processes are effective at minimizing all heavy metal contamination.

The Bottom Line: Your Only Safe Plant-Based Choice

The Plant Protein Reality:

  • OWYN Pro Elite: the only plant-based RTD cleared for daily use — #7 ranked, 88% of CR’s level of concern
  • 77% of plant proteins FAILED testing - 14 out of 15 exceeded CR's level of concern
  • Premium sourcing + rigorous testing - Why OWYN succeeded where others failed
  • Comparable price to contaminated options - $2.25/serving vs $1.75-3.00
  • Cleared for daily use — Consumer Reports limit: 1 serving per day
  • No alternatives exist - If you need plant protein, this is your only choice

Our Recommendation:

If you're plant-based, vegan, or lactose intolerant → Use OWYN Pro Elite.

It's not just "the best" plant protein. It's the only plant-based RTD cleared for daily use.

Every other plant-based product in CR’s October round exceeded CR’s level of concern. Some by 6–18×. OWYN came in at 88% — under the bar.

This isn't a preference - it's a safety imperative.
