Every brand-safety article on this site carries a small embedded poll: "What protein do you currently use?" It was built to help individual readers get a fast answer about their own brand. It has quietly become something else — a running record of which brands a large, self-selected population of safety-motivated consumers is worried enough about to go check.
This page pulls that data out of a one-time report and gives it a permanent home. It will be updated on a fixed monthly schedule, not left to go stale. What you're looking at is not a popularity ranking. Brands with the most search volume in the mainstream sense — Optimum Nutrition, Muscle Milk — are not necessarily at the top here. This is a safety-concern index: which brands are people specifically checking on a site built around heavy-metal testing data.
Top 20 Brands, Ranked by Safety Search Volume
Ranked by deduplicated, normalized poll submissions. "Move" compares this edition's rank to the last published ranking (CleanProteinList.com's July 14, 2026 consumer survey, n = 2,669). Brands with no July rank are new to the tracked top 20 this edition — not necessarily new to the market.
| Rank | Brand | Submissions | Move |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Orgain | 419 | — #1 |
| 2 | Premier Protein | 256 | — #2 |
| 3 | Levels | 88 | — #3 |
| 4 | Naked Nutrition | 84 | — #4 |
| 5 | Garden of Life | 58 | ▲ +2 |
| 6 | Optimum Nutrition | 56 | ▼ −1 |
| 7 | Isopure | 54 | ▲ +1 |
| 8 | Nutricost | 51 | ▼ −2 |
| 9 | OWYN | 50 | ▲ +1 |
| 10 | Sunwarrior | 50 | ▼ −1 |
| 11 | Fairlife | 42 | ▲ +4 |
| 12 | Transparent Labs | 41 | — #12 |
| 13 | Vital Proteins | 41 | ▼ −2 |
| 14 | Truvani | 40 | — #14 |
| 15 | Ascent | 37 | NEW |
| 16 | Muscle Milk | 37 | NEW |
| 17 | Vega | 35 | ▼ −4 |
| 18 | NOW Sports | 32 | NEW |
| 19 | MyProtein | 27 | NEW |
| 20 | LeanFit | 27 | NEW |
Behind the top 20, submissions spread across more than 90 additional distinct brands and product lines, none exceeding roughly 20 mentions — 836 raw submissions named a brand outside this tracked set (763 after deduplication). The field beyond the top four remains genuinely fragmented; no single brand outside the leaders commands more than about 2% of unique respondents.
The Story Behind This Edition's Rankings
The top four did not change. Orgain, Premier Protein, Levels, and Naked Nutrition held their exact same positions from the July 14 baseline through this edition, with Orgain adding 31 net new submissions and extending its lead over #2 to a wider margin than it held in July. Orgain's continued dominance is worth reading alongside two active pieces of litigation this site already tracks: an Amazon class action and a Costco class action, both filed July 31, 2026, alleging undisclosed lead, cadmium, and arsenic in Orgain Organic Protein Powder. Consumers checking a brand's safety data after seeing it in the news is exactly the behavior this index is built to catch.
Garden of Life is this edition's clearest mover, climbing from #7 to #5 with 12 additional net submissions — including 9 of its 58 total submissions arriving in just the 14 days before this update, a faster recent pace than all but Orgain itself. This tracks with an active, ongoing class action against the brand: DeHerrera v. Garden of Life (C.D. Cal., No. 5:25-cv-03118), filed December 16, 2025 over undisclosed lead in Organic Plant-Based Protein, remained pending as of this site's own lawsuit tracker in August 2026 — see our full breakdown. The case isn't new this period, but continued visibility of an active suit against a major brand is a plausible, honest explanation for sustained search interest — unlike Fairlife, which also gained meaningfully (four spots, #15 to #11) with no comparable event we can point to. We're reporting Fairlife's move as real and measured, without an attributed cause.
Vega posted the largest decline among ranked brands, falling four spots from #13 to #17 on essentially flat submission volume (36 in July, 35 now) — a relative decline driven by other brands growing around it rather than Vega losing ground outright.
Five brands are new to the tracked top 20 this edition: Ascent, Muscle Milk, NOW Sports, MyProtein, and LeanFit. None of these are new to the market or necessarily new to the data — they simply did not place in the July 14 top 15 as previously published. Expanding this edition's table to 20 brands (versus 15 previously) surfaces more of the real field.
How This Index Is Built
The underlying instrument is a short, voluntary poll embedded across CleanProteinList.com's blog content: visitors are asked what protein brand they currently use and whether it's a powder, ready-to-drink shake, or that they're switching brands. The free-text brand field was added to the poll on January 21, 2026; submissions before that date recorded only the product-type answer and are excluded from the brand rankings above.
| Platform | Formspree, embedded site-wide on blog articles |
| Total raw poll submissions (all-time) | 3,407 |
| Submissions naming a brand | 3,343 (raw) |
| Unique, brand-identifiable respondents (deduplicated) | 2,881 |
| Brand field added | January 21, 2026 |
| Collection window (this edition) | November 6, 2025 – August 29, 2026 |
| Deduplication method | Brand names normalized for spelling, capitalization, and recognizable product-line variants (e.g. "ON Gold Standard" → Optimum Nutrition), then consecutive same-brand submissions within a 6-minute window collapsed to one. No IP or account data is collected or used. |
| Incentive | None |
